Farming has been a way of life to the Bosworth family for generations. Fred Bosworth started keeping pigs in 1919 after returning from serving in Belgium, France and then India during the First World War. He moved to Spains Hall in 1934 and there have been pigs on the farm ever since.
Fred and his wife had two sons who came into the business and that is when the partnership, 'F J Bosworth & Sons'', was formed. Both sons (Tony & Henry) went on to have children of their own and the succession continued with each of their sons managing the business together until 2018. The business is now managed by Stuart & Jack Bosworth (Grandson & Gt. Grandson of Fred Bosworth respectively).
Stuart and Jack - with the help of their fantastic team of staff - continue to progress the various enterprises within the business, the main two of which are the pigs and the arable. They now farm 330 hectares of arable land growing combinable crops and have a 540 sow unit finishing the progeny across two sites. The business also generates additional income from other enterprises including solar energy, lettings and contract farming services.

The Bosworth family have kept pigs since 1919 so it would be fair to say that there has been plenty of experience and knowledge passed down the generations from then to now. All the pigs are kept indoors with some being housed in more traditional farm buildings whilst the majority live in modern and purpose-built pig housing.

The partners of F J Bosworth & Sons take pride in having what they feel is a sustainable business model but one which they're actively looking to improve further. The cereals grown on the farm are the two main ingredients that go into the pig feed. The cereals are milled on site and mixed with the other ingredients using electricity generated by solar panels on the farm. The manure from the pigs then goes onto the cereal crops providing valuable nutrition. In other words, the crops feed the pigs and the pigs feed the crops!
Stuart & Jack are continually looking at how the business can become even more sustainable and reduce environmental impact. Part of this process means undergoing a carbon audit which is due to commence imminently. The results from this will allow them to set a net zero greenhouse gas emissions target date. The National Farmers Union has set a a target for the whole of agriculture in England & Wales to achieve net zero by 2040.
